On December 14th, 2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to dismantle net neutrality regulations. Net Neutrality protections were established during the Obama administration to protect Americans' online communication and ensure that all Internet service providers are treating web traffic equally. The implications of this vote reach far and wide, impacting both low income and minority populations negatively. In response to this vote, Bright Funds has established the Net Neutrality Fund to support nonprofits working to protect the rights of Internet users.

As an Engineer I struggle to reconcile the reality that so much is built atop OpenSource Software, so much is learned from free and open knowledge banks... and rarely is much paid back in developer time, contributions, or funding. Here I'm trying to hand pick a few OSS initiatives, and free, Creative Commons licensed knowledge sharing services that I believe still attempt to maintain the original intent of the Internet. Way I figure it, supporting OSS and Creative Commons is good mojo toward the career of any engineer who uses these tools, and for me it's a moral issue. Yes, not as critical as humanitarian aid, but in the long-haul, likely pretty effective towards the Internet & Tech that I dream of. As I discover more viable nonprofits to fund, I should be able to add them here.
